Can Instagram Win You Clients?

In all honesty, I’ve yet to see any true value from organic posting on Instagram. In February, I posted consistently on Instagram using a mix of stories, normal posts, carousel posts and a few reels. I mixed up my content with value-added content (“how to” stuff), topical content, and a bit of personal stuff, so people see the real person behind my brand. I researched hashtags and used Planoly to plan out my content. And I made sure I added CTA’s (call to action) on my post.

My ultimate aim of posting on Instagram is to drive traffic to my site and to start to have engaging conversations with my audience.

So, after 28 days of (mostly!) consistent posting. What were my results?

  • 0.6% increase in followers, up to 3024
  • 219 profile visits which was down 50% from January when I was running paid-for ads
  • 6 website taps, down by 84.7% from Jan (I was running paid-for ads)
  • My highest performing post across the month was this one which had a reach of 309
  • My posts are not getting the comments/engagement that I wanted.

I’ve learned that to get engagement, you need to give engagement! You need to dedicate time every day to comment on other people’s posts, share other people’s content and use DMs to build on those relationships. It’s a lot of time and effort and at the moment, I’m not sure it’s something I can actually fit in. I have seen results from paid-for ads on Instagram, I use them to get people into my New Business Bootcamp but I’ve yet to nail the organic bit of Instagram.

I regularly get new business leads from LinkedIn on the other hand and I would still recommend LinkedIn as a place to build your brand and share content over Instagram. Too often I see agencies spend too much time on Instagram, chasing followers rather than really thinking about whether true relationships are being built there.

I’d love your thoughts — can Instagram actually land you new clients?
